Dry Sauna

Have you ever been in a dry sauna? It’s a very dry heat that immediately makes you sweat from every opening and causes you to feel like you can’t catch your breath. You want to make a break for the door so you can get some fresh air. Welcome to Egypt.

Early wake up call Friday (big surprise) but it was a good call as we could hit the Valley of the Kings before it reached 115 degrees. It was only 102.

The Valley of the Kings is where all the burial sites are located - Ramses 2, 3, 9, among others, and most famously, King Tut. (I don’t have a single picture of our visit are photos are strictly prohibited.) Did you know that King Tut’s remains are still in his burial chamber? The outermost sarcophagus is there but everything else is in the Egyptian Museum in Cairo. King Tut’s black and shriveled little self is housed in a glass chamber with a white sheet covering him from his chin to his ankles. Guess he was a modest guy?

Pit Tomb #33 is also located in the Valley of the Kings area so we make a stop long enough to take a photo. There isn’t much to see here but it has special significance for LDS people as it initiated the Pearl of Great Price.

One stop that we made this trip that we didn’t make as students in 1986 was to the ruins of Habu Temple the temple of Ramses the 3rd. A group from Chicago University is restoring it. Guess they don’t work during the summer - its too hot. Go figure.

After lunch it got to be about 180 degrees so we retreated to the pool at our hotel and a quick cleanup and pack job in order to catch a flight to Cairo at 8:00. We did as instructed and were at the airport in PLENTY of time for our flight, which ended up being a good thing as the power went out. I tried to take a picture, but it was a little dark.
